Why Fall Is the Best Time to Deep-Clean Carpets Before the Rainy Season

Fall is the smartest time for a deep carpet clean in Greater Seattle — before rain, mud, and closed windows lock in a summer's worth of soil. Here's why, and how to prepare.

In Greater Seattle, fall doesn't ease in. One week it's dry sidewalks and open windows, and the next it's steady rain from Everett to Tacoma — and everything that comes with it comes through your front door: wet shoes, damp paws, and fine grit worked into the carpet with every trip in and out.

That's why fall, just before the rainy season settles in, is the best time to deep-clean your carpets. You're not just cleaning up summer. You're giving your carpet a clean starting point before its hardest months begin.

What summer leaves behind

Even in a tidy home, summer is hard on carpet. Open doors and windows let in dust and pollen. Bare feet carry oils that settle into the pile. Kids, guests, and pets track in soil from yards and trails from Seattle to Snoqualmie. Most of it concentrates in entryways, hallways, stairs, and traffic lanes.

Vacuuming picks up what's loose on the surface, and it matters — keep doing it. But it doesn't remove the soil that has worked down into the fibres. Left there, that grit acts like sandpaper every time you walk on it, wearing the carpet out faster. A fall deep clean removes that buildup before months of wet weather press it in deeper.

Why timing matters once the rain starts

Once the rainy season is underway, three things change. First, you track in more — and wetter — soil, and moisture carries the dirt that's already there further down. Second, your windows stay closed, so odours linger: pet smells, cooking, that general mustiness a lived-in carpet can develop. Starting the season with a genuinely clean carpet makes a noticeable difference to how a closed-up house smells in November and December. Third, life gets tighter around the holidays — fall cleaning gets the job done before guests arrive, while the weather still gives you some flexibility to air a room out afterwards.

A fall clean isn't about perfection. It's about not spending the whole wet season adding new soil on top of old soil.

What a Monarch deep clean actually involves

Monarch Cleaning Services has been cleaning carpets in Greater Seattle since 1986. We are licensed and insured, and every carpet cleaning uses truck-mounted hot water extraction — often called steam cleaning. The equipment stays in the van; only the hose and cleaning wand come inside.

On a typical job, our technician first inspects the carpet and pre-treats spots and traffic lanes, then cleans with the truck mount. Standard pet deodorizing is included in every carpet cleaning. Stairs are cleaned per step, and you can either leave carpeted areas clear or have us move furniture as part of the service.

A note on honesty, because it matters with stains: not every stain can be fully removed, and we never guarantee complete stain or odour removal. Pet urine that has soaked into the pad or subfloor, for example, may not come out completely with surface cleaning. What we can promise is a proper assessment, the right treatment for what's actually there, and this: if a treated odour issue resurfaces shortly after a job, we come back and re-treat the area.

"In fall I spend extra time on entryways and traffic lanes, because that's where summer soil builds up and where the rain will hit first. Before I arrive, pick up small items off the carpet, secure your pets, and make sure I can park the van close and reach a water spigot — that prep lets me get straight to the cleaning. Afterwards, a little ventilation helps a lot with drying." — Gideon Bertschinger, Lead Technician

How long does it take to dry?

Plan on a typical drying time of about 4–8 hours, depending on ventilation and carpet type. That's a range, not a promise — a thick carpet on a damp day will sit at the longer end. Opening a window, or running a fan or heating, helps. Fall helps too: you still get days when you can air the house out while the carpet dries.

A short fall checklist before we arrive

  • Pick up small items, toys, and breakables from carpeted areas.
  • Secure pets somewhere comfortable away from the work area.
  • Make sure we can park the van close to an entrance and reach an outside water spigot.
  • Point out any spots, stains, or pet areas you're worried about when the technician inspects — the more specific you are, the better he can pre-treat them.

You don't need to move the big furniture unless you want to — just let us know your preference.

Book before the rain settles in

Our technician runs routes Monday–Thursday across Greater Seattle, so fall slots fill as the weather turns. If your carpets went through a busy summer — especially with pets, kids, or a high-traffic entryway — now is the time, before the wet season locks everything in.

Call Monarch Cleaning Services at 206-782-2994 or book online to schedule your fall deep clean. We're available Monday–Thursday, and commercial work can also be arranged on Fridays and Saturdays with notice.

Clean carpet going into the rainy season won't stay pristine until spring — no one's does, not in Seattle. But it will look better, smell fresher, and wear slower through the months when you're inside the most.
